Strong Takeoff to Summer

July 18th, 2022 |

Highest passenger traffic for June since 2001

(Hanover Township, PA) – A strong takeoff to summer travel at Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) produced the highest passenger traffic for the month of June since 2001.

Last month, 92,652 passengers traveled through ABE – a 4.66% increase from June 2021.

Month                Passengers          Percentage increase          Month                Passengers

“There’s definitely a notable buzz in the terminal complex as travel demand remains high.  We don’t anticipate a slow down in activity at ABE until after Labor Day weekend. Throughout these last few months, Airport staff and stakeholders have done an amazing job of providing the highest level of customer service during this summer surge of passengers,” said Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA).

By the numbers, Allegiant reported a traffic jump of 13.01%, while American moved up 8.24%, and United increased 3.14%. Delta decreased 15.48% vs. last June.

Heavy volumes of air travelers are expected from June – August, so the Airport advises all passengers departing between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to arrive at least 2 hours before their flight to ensure they reach their gate for on-time boarding.

Travel tips to remember:

  • Boarding begins 30-minutes prior to departure
  • Checked bags will not be accepted less than 30-minutes before departure
  • Aircraft doors close 15-minutes before their posted departure time, and will not reopen
  • With (2) TSA Checkpoint processing lanes operating at ABE, there is the potential for additional wait times due to a heavy volume of passengers

“Not giving yourself extra time to park, check-in, process through TSA, and reach your gate could result in missing your flight,” said Stoudt.

17,461,990 pounds of air cargo was processed through Lehigh Valley International Airport in June  – a decrease of 13.1% from June 2021.
