Slight Surge in May

June 23rd, 2020 |

13,107 passengers takeoff from ABE as summer travel approaches

(Hanover Township, PA) – Following months of terminal silence due to the COVID-19 pandemic, your neighborhood airport experienced a slight surge in passenger traffic during May.

Last month, 13,107 passengers traveled through Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) – an 82.8 percent decrease from May ’19. While these travel numbers aren’t nearly the results of recent years, it serves as a positive indicator with ABE’s traffic numbers in May registered ahead of the national average by 7.5% percent.

“As the Stay at Home orders were lifted, passenger activity definitely increased which produced a few extra smiles for us. Seeing the positive attitudes displayed throughout this health crisis by our front-line workers continues to remind the community that our strength and resiliency will be key factors in restoring enjoyable air travel in the region,” said Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director, LNAA.

By the numbers, Delta reported a significant passenger traffic decrease of 97.5%, United dropped 94.7%, American is down 77.5%, and Allegiant declined by 74.4%.

“Reduction in air service certinaly impacted passenger numbers as all airlines operating at ABE adjusted their schedules based on demand,” said Stoudt.

Currently, Delta has suspended service to Atlanta (ATL) and American has made a similar decision for flights to Philadelphia (PHL).  Beginning on July 6th, United will make a hub change by suspending service to Chicago (ORD) and restarting the bus service to Newark (EWR).

During a press conference at Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) on June 11th, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA) unveiled the Airport’s new passenger health and safety initiative Fly Safe with ABE – primarily focused on COVID-19 prevention measures – while also introducing the aviator in charge of navigating passengers through terminal – Abe, the pilot!

“From the start of the search for a new normal at ABE, our vision was helping to ensure an enjoyable and safe travel experience by producing the healthiest environment for family friends, and travel companions,” said Stoudt.
