Preparing for Summer

May 23rd, 2023 |

73,481 passengers traveled through ABE in April

(Hanover Township, PA) – Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) is preparing for another busy summer travel season in 2023.

“The Airport is anticipating a heavy volume of passengers as the school year ends, with many families starting departing for their vacations.  ABE staff is ready for the rush, but we also encourage our passengers to remain engaged during their air travel,” said Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA).

Here are some travel tips to remember:

  • Give yourself extra time to process through the TSA Checkpoint
  • Visit TSA.gov or @askTSA with any general questions or to arrange travel with special circumstances
  • If you are traveling with children, double-check their carry-on bags to ensure there aren’t any prohibited items
  • Passengers under the age of 18 years-old do not need travel identification if accompanied by a companion
  • Boarding begins 30 to 45-minutes prior to departure
  • Checked bags will not be accepted less than 30-minutes before departure

Last month, 73,481 passengers traveled through ABE.

By the numbers, American increased 6.3%. United decreased 3.7%, Allegiant dropped 12.5%, and Delta passenger traffic declined 28% from last April.

“As they overcome the pilot shortage and rising operating expenses, airlines have reduced flight schedules which will impact ticket prices and passenger activity across the country,” said Stoudt.

Construction Update: A major infrastructure improvement arrives this summer with the projected completion of the new TSA Checkpoint and Terminal Connector at ABE.  This $35-million infrastructure investment will deliver the following enhancements for passengers:

  • Capacity for (4) TSA security checkpoint screening lanes
  • Improved vertical circulation equipment (elevators and escalators)
  • Shorter walking distances with separation of arriving and departing passengers
  • Enhanced air purification systems

23,605,287 pounds of air cargo was processed through Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) in April – an increase of 53.4% from April 2022 – which represents the busiest air cargo activity in April for ABE.
