Officer “Mikki” On Patrol at LVIA

K-9 Unit re-established for the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Police Department

Hanover Township, PA – Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA) has announced the arrival of Police Officer Mikki – which completes the re-establishment of a K-9 Police Unit at Lehigh Valley International Airport (LVIA).

A 19-month old Belgian Malinois – Mikki began training in March at Progressive K-9 Academy (Walnutport, PA) with partner, Officer James Scoble. Mikki recently earned her certifications from the National Police Canine Association for explosive detection, tracking and patrol.

“Officer Mikki gives us the ability to add another level of protection for our passengers, customers and the public by supplementing our current security and screening procedures,” said Chief Timothy D. Koder, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Police Department.

Due to financial challenges and with area law enforcement pledging assistance from their K-9 Units, the Airport Authority suspended the program in 2012 following the retirement of its original canine officer, Ben, for medical reasons.

“With support from the Board of Governors, this became a priority for the Airport Authority and its Police Department to enhance our response to any potential security matter,” said Charles Everett, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority.

The Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Police Department will offer the services of Mikki to area law enforcement agencies and mutual aid responders throughout the Lehigh Valley.
