Morning Rush! Give yourself extra time.

February 6th, 2020 |

Increased passenger traffic at ABE starting on February 12th

(Hanover Township, Pa.) – Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) has a travel tip for passengers in 2020 that have morning departures scheduled: give yourself extra time, so you don’t miss your flight.

Fresh off its highest traffic total since 2004, ABE will experience a significant increase of flights starting on Wednesday, February 12th due to the expansion of Allegiant’s air service.

“This growth spurt will include additional early morning departures, so passengers should not cut it close or they could miss their flight. We want to avoid any back log during screening at the TSA checkpoint,” said Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA).

If you are departing from your neighborhood airport between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., we encourage passengers to arrive at least 2 hours (industry standard) before their flight to ensure they process through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint in enough time so they can reach their gate for boarding.

Currently, the TSA checkpoint is open at 3:00 a.m. daily (subject to change if necessary).

“The travel environment at ABE still provides the highest level of comfort and convenience as we’ve enhanced the customer experience over the last several years with the addition of new amenities,” said Stoudt.

Last year, the Airport Authority (LNAA) unveiled a major terminal enhancement with a planned expansion of the TSA checkpoint and the construction of a new Terminal Connector with an approximate cost ranging from $22 to $26 million.

“Passenger growth is happening faster than our forecasts, and we must address these essential infrastructure improvements which include increased efficiency in passenger screening while elevating the level of customer service,” said Stoudt.

This multi-phase and multi-million dollar investment will help ensure ABE maintains a competitive edge while delivering the Airport Authority’s vision of being the best regional airport system in North America. There are two main areas of focus:

    • TSA Checkpoint– Increasing capacity from 2 processing lanes to 3 (and eventually 4).
    • Vertical Circulation– Intuitive wayfinding for inbound and outbound passenger flow while, reducing the number of vertical transitions between floors.

Project completion is expected in early 2023.
