Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) Unveils Book Exchange for Passengers

July 12th, 2019 |

#ABEreads created through partnership between the Airport and (3) local libraries

Did you forget something to read when packing for your business trip or vacation?  Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

On Friday, July 12th, Airport officials joined representatives from the public libraries in Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton to unveil the ABE Book Exchange.

“This partnership really exemplifies the cooperation of four regional assets coming together to give passengers of all ages the option of passing their time in the terminal or in the air with a good book and also promotes the sustained importance of literacy within the Lehigh Valley,” said Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director of Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority.

Located in the Wilfred M. “Wiley” Post Departure Concourse, the exchange will be filled with donated books from all three local libraries.  Basically, passengers can take a book for their flight or leave a book if they are done with it before boarding or after arrival.

“Literacy happens anywhere, and we love the idea of kids taking a book or two on the plane to experience the joy of reading while traveling.  And hey, why should kids have all the fun?  We’re happy to provide some books for grown-up readers to enjoy as well,” said Josh Berk, Director, Bethlehem Area Public Library.

When a book leaves the shelf, boards a flight, finds a seat, and lands in a new destination; we encourage passengers to use the hashtag #ABEreads and share its journey!

“Every traveler departing a first class airport like ABE has access to this fantastic resource. This initiative started by ABE is exciting and certainly makes the public libraries of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton extremely proud to be a part of it,” said Jennifer L. Long, Library Director, Easton Area Public Library.

The takeoff of this program and partnership raises the level of customer service at ABE.

“The Allentown Public Library is very excited to be part of this new program!  Air travel and leisure reading make perfect companions, so it just makes sense for libraries and ABE to work together to provide such a unique and handy service to people who travel through our area,” said Renee Haines, Library Director, Allentown Public Library.
