Funding to support the Terminal Connector/TSA Checkpoint Project

April 23rd, 2022 |

$1.7 million from the Aviation Transportation Assistance Program

(Hanover Township, PA) – Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) is among nine other airports that will receive the assistance of $10 million in state investments to enhance aviation operations, safety, and security for passengers.

On Friday, ABE was awarded $1.7 million from the Aviation Transportation Assistance Program to continue construction of the Terminal Connector/Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Checkpoint Project which enhances terminal commercial development connectivity across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

With completion expected in 2023, the project cost is an estimated $32 million and delivers the following upgrades at ABE:

  • (4) lane security checkpoint with new equipment provided by the TSA
  • New vertical circulation equipment with redundancy to enhance ADA compliance
  • State-of-the-art air purification system and improved air circulation
  • Separation of outbound and inbound passenger flow

“After nearly 50 years, the passenger experience flying through your neighborhood airport will be transformed. This critical infrastructure investment is necessary to meet the current demand and future travel needs of our growing region. We’re grateful Governor Wolf, the PennDOT Bureau of Aviation, and state legislators from the Lehigh Valley support and recognize the importance of the project,” said Thomas R. Stoudt, Executive Director, Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority (LNAA).

Pennsylvania has 121 public-use aviation facilities including airports, heliports, and seaplane bases, and these new investments will expand aviation-related operational and economic opportunities statewide.

“Aviation plays a vital role in keeping our state’s economy moving,” Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf said. “These investments will help Pennsylvania’s airports operate safely, expand to meet current demands, and sustain growth well into the future.”
